China Glaze Hauting Collection, Halloween 2011, Swatches and Review

I don't know about you but whenever Fall collections start to pop up on the shelves, I always feel a little thrill. First because I love those dusty, murky, rich or vampy colors but also because it means that Halloween collections will soon be released, shortly followed by Holiday and Winter collections... In other words, those few months are definitely my favorite nail polish related period of the year.

Well today, I have the Halloween collection that I was the most excited about for review, China Glaze Haunting!

Crimson is the darkest grape/plum jelly. It looks near black almost all of the time but I love it anyway. Formula was a bit thick on this but not unmanageable, this is just one, rather thick, coat.

Near Dark is a dark murky, yellow based green jelly. I can never have enough of green jellies and this is no exception, especially considering the yellow base, it really sets it apart from other drak greens like Nars Zulu for example. Two coats on the pictures.

Haunting is a beautiful black packed with round silver glitter. What makes this polish outstanding compared to its look-alikes is the amazing formula, I was really awed by the first coat that gave me a nice and almost complete coverage, I say almost because I did need 2 coats, but still wow!

It's Alive is this year's Halloween green glitter and let me tell you that I love it soooo much! Another yellow based green packed with round and hex glitter. It was a bit thicker than Haunting but very easy to apply. This is two coats of It's Alive with two coats of topcoat.

Goulish Glow is probably the polish I was the most curious about. Does it really glow in the dark? Well... It does, like crazy... but in the bottle... On the nail, it's more faint, 2 coats will give you a nice effect but it doesn't last very long. It's not a total let down either, I think I would recommend it anyway. This is 2 coats over Near Dark.

Overall:
I really like this collection and I'm happy that China Glaze released glitters again this year. I also don't think that you could pass on Near Dark if you love greens. Now I can't wait for the Holiday collection!

So, what do you think? Did you pick any of these? Are you happy with China Glaze Halloween collection compared to the other brands'?

  1. It's Alive looks like the rock star of the bunch!

I want to love the vampy colors, but they are so dark, I feel like I could take an existing green or dark maroon creme and add black.

    I know, sinner!

Still, It's Alive is hot on my list!!!!

  18. Your swatches are so incredibly neat and pictures are stunningly sharp, I'm in awe of your skills!!!
Oh and if you want the glow in the dark to show up better you can best use it over a white base. It glows more.

  19. Thanks for giving us such great shots of this collection. I had seen plenty of hype with bottle shots, but these are the best close up shots I have seen. I still think I will take a pass on this collection. I am not much into the whole Halloween thing, despite it's my b'day. Just seems like a lot of $ and hype for a one day into night commercial celebration...least for me. No offense to those who love all the ghoulish stuff that I think is not ghoulish but foolish $ spent.

  20. I'm not keen on greens, so I'll pass on those two, but Crimson & Haunting are calling me... I already have the old version of Ghoulish Glow, it wasn't a disappointment for me, though I grant you the effect doesn't last long, that is if you don't "recharge" it by exposing it to light, but I don't know how old and new version compare.
And I'm just like you, I adore Fall and Halloween, both for themselves and because they herald Winter and Christmas (and because they're by far the best period for polish collections!!)

  21. For me, glow in the dark polishes work (and look) better over light colored polish. The texture does look interesting over a darker color though. When I get around to playing with glow in the dark polishes this season I'll probably do a tape manicure with light and dark parts and see how that works.

  22. @beachgal Thank you sweetie for always leaving a nice word in the comments. I totally get your point about the Halloween being more about the $ than anything else and I agree that it's a waste of money when it comes to brands releasing Halloween collections with re-editions of core polish with a fancy name and packaging. However, sometimes there are some colors I really love and it's more about that than about the Halloween theme itself. It's ALive or last years's OPI Unripened is a good example, a gorgeous color that I would have bought no matter what time of the year it would have been out.

  23. @Fairy Llie @LeahThanks for the rec girls! I knew it glows better on light colors but I really wanted to show what the pigment looks like on one of the polishes from the same collection.
The tape mani is a good idea, I might wear it on a white/red splatter mani next time, it'll probably glow more and give a nice effect without loosing the Halloween spirit :D
    xoxo.
